Sustainable Building Awards 2022

BUILD Sustainable Building Awards 2022 8 Nov22018 eilume’s primary products–thermoformed ceiling panels–are a more sustainable and more decorative alternative to the near-ubiquitous mineral fiber acoustic panels found in most suspended grid ceilings. Ceilume panels are easily recyclable, and are made with recycled materials, including 98% and 100% recycled versions. They are more durable and cleanable than conventional mineral fiber panels, so they do not need the frequent replacement required of mineral fiber, reducing energy consumption for raw materials extraction, manufacturing and transportation. Transluminous® Ceilume panels, made from light-transmitting material, are used to create luminous ceilings which, combined with LED light sources, can reduce energy consumption on an ongoing basis. Compared to the mineral fiber ceilings they replace, Ceilume panels consume 80% less raw material by weight during manufacturing. They are just 0.013” or 0.030” thick and nest closely, requiring roughly one quarter the cargo space of mineral fiber, lowering transportation impacts. Thermoformed panels have a longer life cycle than mineral fiber panels. Mineral fiber absorbs moisture readily, even from high atmospheric humidity, causing unsightly stains and promoting the growth of mold, mildew and bacteria that make the panels unhygienic, requiring replacement. Moisture can also cause sagging. Mineral fiber panels are vulnerable to edge and corner breakage during normal handling, which can release silica and other fibers into a room, impacting indoor air quality. Stains and visible damage often cause premature ceiling replacement, multiplying life cycle impacts. Thermoformed panels, by contrast, are impervious to moisture, and comply with FEMA Category 4 materials for flood-damage resistance. They are washable, highly stain-resistant, and do not promote mold growth. They have been proven more durable than mineral fiber in third-party testing according to ASTM D1308 – Strength Properties of Prefabricated Architectural Acoustical Tile or Lay-in Ceiling Panels, which evaluates hardness, friability, sag, and transverse strength. Thermoformed panels will predictably need replacement less frequently, reducing energy consumption associated with extraction, manufacture, and transportation. Ceilume has closed the loop on recycling. The company has recycled post-industrial vinyl scrap for decades, and offers many patterns in 98% and 100% recycled content versions. Ceilume now has a take-back program for post-consumer panels and tiles, and recycles over 100 tons of vinyl per year, reducing consumption of virgin vinyl and saving energy. Ceilume’s Transluminous panels, available in three diffusions (clear, frosted, and translucent) can contribute to reduction in daily energy consumption through use as luminous ceilings illuminated by energy-efficient LED lighting sources. Luminous ceilings date back decades, and many older installations have yellowed acrylic lenses that reduce illumination levels. Upgrading these ceilings from fluorescent tubes to LEDs and replacing darkened lenses with new Ceilume panels can lower energy consumption and improve illumination simultaneously. A luminous ceiling could potentially save energy compared to below-ceiling lighting fixtures. Heat generated by above-ceiling LED sources is isolated from the air-conditioned space below the ceiling, which can reduce the burden on air conditioning systems and lower energy usage. Ceilume products are Greenguard Gold certified, and have a health product declaration, using vinyl produced with clean techniques to make it free of heavy metals and significantly reduce chemicals of concern. They can contribute to numerous credits under the USGBC’s LEED program. Ceilume panels are made in 40 patterns both traditional and contemporary to complement virtually any architectural style. They are available in 13 colors and finishes including opaque solids, metallics, faux-wood grain, and Transluminous options.
