If you’re moving to a new house or perhaps refreshing your current home, you may be in the market to update your window dressings. But with so many choices, you may be unsure of which works best in different areas of the house – not just from a practical standpoint, but also style.
Interior designer, Amy Wilson, and Product Developer, Helen O’Connor, from 247 Curtains and 247 Blinds have provided their expert insight into the best window dressings for each room of the house.
Living room
The living room is the central hub of the home and therefore should be where you show off your character and personality the most.
Amy recommends: “I always lean towards floor length made-to-measure curtains in any living space as they really enhance a room and tie interiors together.”
“A great way to add your own personal touch is by introducing your favourite patterns as they can really transform your space and make a stylish statement. Whether you opt for gentle florals, retro geometrics, or luscious green botanical prints, there are so many great designs to choose from to represent your personal style and energy.”
Hallway
One area of the house that can often be overlooked is the hallway, despite this being a key area of the home and your visitors’ first impression.
Amy stresses: “Your hallway shouldn’t be neglected when it comes to style, as it is the first thing you and your guests will be greeted to once entering the home. Curtains are a great option in the hallway as they are very warm and inviting, while offering privacy.”
“If your hallway doesn’t feature any windows, why not hang made-to-measure curtains over your front door? This overlooked styling method is a beautiful way to bring in comforting colours and textures, whilst also being beneficial for reducing heat loss by keeping any draughts out during the colder months.”
Bedroom
Getting the right window dressing in your bedroom is essential for a good night’s sleep and creating a sanctuary-like escape.
Helen shares: “Blackout curtains or blackout blinds are the perfect choice for the bedroom – they help to regulate temperature, keeping the warmth in the winter but blocking heat entering in the summer, as well as preventing light from entering your room. As a result, they help to create the perfect sleeping conditions.”
When it comes to design, Amy advises: “A pared back muted colour palette in the bedroom will help create a calm and restful environment. There is a great range of neutrals including those with pinky undertones that are very effective in bedrooms and work well with gentle greens to create the ultimate in zen vibes. A more traditional and classic bedroom style would be to layer cream curtains in front of wooden Venetian blinds to create extra luxury.”
Kitchen
Shutters are a popular choice in the kitchen and for good reason. They’re stylish and sleek whilst also being super practical.
Helen states: “Surfaces in the kitchen can collect dirt at a slightly quicker rate than in other areas of the home. This makes practicality key when it comes to window dressings. I would recommend shutters in the kitchen due to their easy-to-clean design. A quick wipe down every couple of weeks is all they should need, whilst also looking modern and sleek.”
Amy adds: “If you have big windows or doors that are away from the stove and the sink, then curtains are great for extra decorative value in a room that is generally dominated by hard and cold textures Curtains in the kitchen are a stylish way of introducing some pattern and colour.”
Bathroom
There are a number of blind styles which lend themselves to practicality, durability and style. Depending on your needs and desired look, consider style and material.
Helen explains: “Roller blinds are an excellent choice for bathrooms due to their many benefits. One of the main advantages is their ability to provide privacy control, this feature is especially important for ground-level or street-facing bathrooms.
“Additionally, roller blinds come in a variety of textures and patterns, allowing homeowners the freedom to implement their preferred interior design choices. With moisture-resistant options available, roller blinds are more than suitable for wet and humid environments. Moisture-resistant coatings ensure that the blinds remain in good condition, and do not hold onto moisture or hold smells.
Home office
Helen recommends: “Venetian blinds are a great option for those who work from home. They can help you regulate and filter how much daylight you let into the room, which can help when it comes to visibility and limiting glare on your computer screen. They also allow for more privacy.”
