According to internal sales data from Furn, fruit-themed homeware was a fast growing trend in 2024, with sales soaring by 542% year-on-year. Their best selling designs were their outdoor range of orange and lemon cushions, showing that zesty, citrus motifs were a customer favourite – and an excellent choice for adding a touch of summer liveliness to decking and garden spaces, regardless of the weather!
Looking to this year, the Pinterest Predicts Report named Cherry-Coded as a key for 2025, and Pantone has championed “Mocha Mousse” as their colour of the year, a clear indication that foodie decor trends are only going to continue to grow!
So why is it that for so many of us, our decor draws inspiration from food?
Anna Jones, interior expert at Furn, explains her reasoning: “Our emotions and memories are enriched by foods and flavours, and in times of uncertainty, we naturally seek comfort in food, so it’s no surprise that our sense of home comfort is now deeply connected to this!
“When it comes to colour, tones inspired by natural elements and ingredients can create a grounding, safe and welcoming feeling that we all want to feel in the home. These motifs are evergreen in our lives, so regardless of trends, having them in our homes will always give a sense of familiarity.”
She adds: “As Brits, we are always desperately trying to find ways to escape the gloom of our colder climate! And nothing does the trick quite like fresh fruit— bringing that first hint of sunshine and a burst of zesty, refreshing flavour that reminds us of brighter days ahead.
“Using them in the home and in our outdoor spaces from early spring definitely helps brighten things up and evokes the feelings associated with tasting them – indulgence, escape, lightness, vitality and joy!”
The food-inspired prints set to be on the menu for 2025
Anna and Rea share the food-inspired prints they believe will be huge sources of inspiration in the year ahead:
Rea Bell, design expert at Furn, shares: “I don’t know about you, but I am always trying to find a way to make my holidays last a little longer! This means we’ll be looking at anything that reminds us of sunnier climates and the beach, think beautiful juicy oranges, bright bold lemons, any fruit that evokes a sense of joy. The coastal trend is on the rise too, so expect to see fish, prawns and lobsters making a comeback this summer.”
Anna agrees, commenting: “Mediterranean-inspired foods are definitely growing in popularity – we totally covet their climate and lifestyle – so everything from lemons & oranges to pasta and vibrant seafood are expected to be big in prints this season!”
“Summer fruits such as strawberries and cherries, bringing forward memories of sunny picnics in the park and longer days, are another example of how pinks and reds through fruity motifs can add a fun and feminine touch to people’s homes.”
Feeling hungry to incorporate some more foodie fun into your space? Anna and Rea share some guidance on how you can decorate your space with food-inspired colours and prints:
1. Look to common food pairings
Anna comments: “Finding harmonious colours for the home can be tricky, so looking to food items that are commonly found together can help you get there quickly whilst giving you an added emotional sensation.
“Think rhubarb & custard, strawberries & cream or even mint with chocolate chips! Not only do these colours work well, but they will add a pop of joy and nostalgia to your home as you tap into the feelings that come with the taste and smell of these pairings!
“Having this in mind can be very useful when creating a fun and inviting tablescape or designing an outdoor space for relaxation and hosting guests.”
2. Incorporate your favourite designs effortlessly through accents
Rea states: “You don’t need to overcomplicate it! An easy win to style fruit in the home could be a cushion, some bedding or even a cute fruit-inspired ceramic piece. You don’t have to go crazy; just one item could provide that pop of colour to bring joy to your space.”
3. Brighten up gloomy spaces
Anna shares: “Adding a touch of summer fruits to gloomy spaces at home is a great way to invigorate and add lightness. Try adding into north-facing rooms with low light, as the fresh palette will counteract any dull light and instantly add a bit of sunshine.”
4. Choose colours that evoke emotion
Anna suggests: “Think about the tones in food you love – whether it’s chocolate brown, berry tones or soft peach hues – going with a colour that evokes emotion in you is always the right way, instead of just following a colour trend.”
