Q&A with Mike Whitfield, luxury interior expert at LUSSO about the top trends and interiors uses of marble in the home:

Why is marble the ideal material for your bathroom/kitchen?

“Marble is extremely durable and is superior in strength to many other materials, making it the ideal addition to bathrooms and kitchens. The natural stone is incredibly durable and long lasting, and has been used to build some of the world’s most remarkable architecture and iconic monuments for thousands of years, showing how strong and durable marble can be for your home.

“Marble is highly heat-resistant due to its excellent thermal conductivity, allowing it to withstand temperatures up to 176 degrees Celsius. This makes marble an ideal choice for hot soaks in bathrooms and heated kitchen countertops, offering both durability and functionality in high-temperature environments. While being heat-resistant, freestanding marble baths can also retain a significant amount of heat allowing you to enjoy a tranquil soak for longer.

“If you’re aiming to bring a timeless touch to your luxury bathroom or kitchen, marble is the ideal material to achieve that. Each piece of marble is naturally quarried, ensuring that no two pieces are alike; as the veining and colouration are unique which allows you to create a one-of-a-kind statement in your home or interior.”

What are the marble trends for 2025? Certain colours/patterns/applications?

“We expect the design trends for marble in 2025 to emphasise bold statements and neutral tones. One of the elements marble is renowned for is its natural beauty, bold veining and dramatic patterns. These are set to become more prominent with homeowners moving away from subtle hues and delicate weaving, and embracing the beauty of striking marble. Panda and Arabescato marble are among LUSSO’s top-selling varieties, renowned for their ability to create bold and eye-catching interiors.

“As homeowners seek to bring the outdoors in, deep, earthy tones are becoming increasingly popular. Rich browns, warm greys and deep greens will be at the forefront of marble decor in 2025. LUSSO’s Tiffany marble is a great way to introduce a blend of bold colour and earthy tones into your interior without overwhelming the space. Tiffany is the world’s rarest marble, with emerald green waves complemented by earthy tones and mulberry hues, making it a truly distinctive choice for any bathroom design and the ultimate expression of luxury.

Marble cloakroom basins have become significantly popular, and this is a trend set to stay in 2025. LUSSO’s Via marble basin has seen an increase in sales by 250% MOM. Although small in size, marble basins can bring a compact space to life by adding opulence, character and visual interest. Marble cloakroom basins enable homeowners with small bathrooms to design their spaces without sacrificing luxury, quality, or style.”

What is the most popular marble, and why?

Carrara marble is one of the world’s most popular marble choices. Renowned for its simplistic beauty, which has made it the go-to choice for historical monuments and landmarks. Carrara marble carries hundreds of years of history, thanks to its use in history’s greatest sculptures and works of architecture, and over time this has established the marble as a reputable and trusted stone that homeowners and interior designers want to incorporate into their spaces.

“Carrara’s mesmerising finish is one of the reasons why it’s the most popular amongst architects, developers, designers, and homeowners. The natural stone displays unique swatches and distinctive markings, defined by the purity of the whiteness and density of its subtle grey veining that swims through the honed surface. The versatile colour and pattern variation can be styled within an array of interior themes and colour palettes, making it a popular choice in homes and hotels.

“As sustainability is becoming increasingly important in interior design, homeowners are looking for materials that are not only beautiful but also environmentally responsible. Carrara is an environmentally friendly stone that is fully recyclable and naturally sourced from quarries in the Italian region of Carrara in Tuscany.”

How do different types of marble vary in terms of durability, maintenance, and aesthetic appeal?

“All marble is extremely durable and it all requires the same level of maintenance. As marble is a porous material, it’s important to regularly seal it to prevent it from becoming stained. While marble is durable, all marble types should be cleaned at least once a week or after each use to ensure its longevity.

“All forms of marble provide an opulent aesthetic, and each piece is unique. However, colour variations and patterning may be suited to specific types of interior styles and colour palettes. Tiffany and Bolivian Blue marble are exceptionally rare, showcasing bold colours and distinctive patterns that may not suit every colour scheme. However, they make a striking statement with their unique and eye-catching appearance. Arabescato, Carrara, and Calacatta display neutral hues that create a softer ambience, in marble kitchens and bathrooms, and can complement an array of colours and styles.”

Are there any new or rare varieties of marble that are trending in luxury interiors?

“Tiffany is one of the world’s most precious marbles and is sourced from Brazilian quarries. The rare stone can be seen in the world’s most exclusive projects, and it is highly sought after due to its timeless beauty and scarcity – the marble can only be found in limited locations.  No piece of Tiffany marble is the same, due to its organic formation, each stone is exceptionally unique. This adds visual interest, distinctive character and increases the value of a property.

“Another rare marble that is often seen throughout exclusive and high-end projects across the globe is Bolivian Blue. Extracted from the province of Ayopaya located in Bolivia, the precious stone embraces intense, deep shades of blue pierced with white and yellow veining. It can be seen on LUSSO’s Muse Bath which displays a refined silhouette, a smooth polished finish and symmetrical lines making it an admirable choice for prestigious spaces.”

Can you ever mix marbles? What combinations would you recommend and what are the benefits of this?

“You can experiment with various styles and colours of marble by combining different textures, such as honed and polished finishes, to create a visually appealing and subtle contrast.

“Combining marble is a timeless trend that always looks beautiful, you could blend colours such as the white crystal base of Carrara marble with the dramatic allure of Nero Marquina, or mix marbles that have similar tones and patternings for a contrast that is not too overpowering. However, if you’re styling marble together you should always start with a neutral base and then add different tones, finishes and shapes. Blending different marble types and decor can add a visually appealing statement that enhances the look of your space.”

How is marble being used in modern luxury interiors? Are there any innovative applications?

“Marble is a common choice for high-end interior projects due to its versatility and luxurious appeal. It can be employed as a backsplash to enhance basins and vanity units, or make a bold statement with a freestanding marble bath.

“Additionally, marble tiles can be used to create a captivating feature wall. As mentioned previously, marble has become increasingly popular in cloakrooms and small bathrooms. This year, 24% of LUSSO’s marble sales are cloakroom basins, as homeowners are realising they can still create a striking feature in small spaces and don’t have to compromise on quality or style.

“LUSSO has seen a huge increase in searches for marble tables, as it’s a stone suitable for any space in the home, and given its investment value, luxury interior designers often incorporate it into living rooms through elegant marble coffee and side tables. These pieces, when paired with neutral-toned seating, beautifully showcase the marble’s luxurious appeal.

“Marble can also be applied to hallways, covering floors, walls, and ceilings, providing a modern homage to classical architecture.”

Can bringing marble into the home boost its value?

“High quality stones such as marble are considered appealing to property investors. High quality finishes and materials often help to differentiate a home, and make a property worth more than others, even if they are similar in size and location. Particularly in the kitchen and bathroom. Whether it’s through marble flooring, countertops, or a backsplash, the allure of marble and its long-lasting luxury will be enough to increase the overall value.

“You can also place marble tiles on the floor anywhere in your home, and this instantly upgrades the elegance and value of the home. Natural stone floors are high in quality and give functional value that will last for years to come.“

How does LUSSO ‘sustainably source’ their marble?

“Our marble designs are extracted naturally from quarries around the world, where a single block is carefully selected for its quality and character. Skilled artisans first extract the marble using precise cutting techniques to minimise waste and preserve the integrity of the stone. The block is then meticulously inspected and prepared, as expert artisans use advanced tools to cut and shape the marble, honing or polishing its surface to achieve a flawless finish. Each step, from quarrying to final polishing, ensures that the marble maintains its natural beauty and strength.

“The marble process can vary significantly depending on the complexity of the design. Generally, the entire process – from quarrying the marble to the final product – can take anywhere from several weeks to several months.

“As LUSSO’s marble is natural it means it is likely to last a lifetime making it much more of a sustainable option than artificial marble that is composed of crushed marble or other stone mixed with resins.”
